I love Summer. Spring is also magnificent. The other two seasons can suck it.
Cold weather is not fun. You have to wear actual clothes, like, all the time?! Not for me, thank you.
And yes! I know! It doesn’t get cold in Queensland! NONSENSE. Not only does it indeed get cold, it’s a super irritating kind of cold. It’s not harsh enough to wear fabulous coats and hats and gloves, oh you know I’d slay proper cold fashion! No, it’s just cold enough to throw on a pair of socks with your thongs. Not that I – effervescent style icon that I am – would ever even contemplate such a hideous crime!
It gets cold enough to warrant a fire, which feels great for like half an hour until you’re over heating. And it’s still warm enough to trick you into thinking the beach is a good idea, until you get there and spend five miserable fully clothed minutes sitting on damp chilly sand before admitting defeat and going home to your overzealous fireplace.
Queensland winter is half arsed. It’s a limbo. Just a constant, nagging assault on the senses without any real winter novelties. Dramatic? Perhaps. I suppose there are maybe a few cute things about it.
And in an effort to not be an entirely depressing little brat about it, I am going to compile a list of things that I do in fact enjoy about the wrong seasons. Let’s get excited. Yay.
Things that are not entirely shit about Autumn/Winter:
That exciting fresh smell in the air
My ponies fuzzy winter coat
Deciduous trees
Sitting around a fire
Less instant sunburn
Getting an armful of warm laundry out of the dryer
Perfect portrait light all day
Being able to sleep in your car without the threat of heatstroke
Less people at the beaches/waterfalls
My cat wants to snuggle all the time
Cappuccinos hit different
Watching your breath steam
Crunchy frosty grass early in the morning
Amazing burnt orange sunsets
When you’ve been out adventuring in the cold and finally start to warm up in your car with the heaters on full blast
I can wear my grandads cozy old jumpers
Snuggling into a freshly made bed with heavy blankets
Makeup that doesn’t immediately melt out (and hair styling that stays in place!)
Splitting firewood
Crisp night skies
My butt in a good pair of jeans
And the opportunity to perfectly match your socks to your favourite pair of thongs!
